The first step in developing a diagnosis is a consultation with our sleep apnea expert, Dr Phillip Stein.
You will then undertake a Sleep Study, either in a hospital or in the comfort of your own home, depending on your location.
After your testing, you will meet again with Dr Stein to analyse and discuss the results, and confirm your diagnosis.
If obstructive sleep apnea is diagnosed, Dr Stein will conduct further testing with two specialised machines: a pharyngometer and a rhinometer. We are one of the few practices in Australia to have both of these machines in-house. They enable us to assess the oral and nasal air passages for blockages, and determine what sort of treatment would be most effective for your particular case.
Recent US and Australian scientific research shows that dental sleep appliances are the gold standard treatment for snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, with extremely high success rates.
Patients report rapid improvements in their snoring and breathing during sleep, feeling more refreshed on waking and less tired throughout the day.
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines are considered the best treatment for patients with severe sleep apnea.
However, some patients do not tolerate the machines well, or find them impractical when travelling or in times of power outages. These patients often find that a dental sleep appliance is of great benefit. You will discuss the different treatment options available to you during your consultation with Dr Stein.
In certain countries, dental sleep appliances are available over-the-counter or through online retailers. Buyer beware! These appliances are often ineffective, as they are not customised to each individual patient. Few are adjustable, meaning that not only are they less comfortable and effective, they carry a high risk of causing serious side-effects, such as adverse tooth movement and jaw joint problems.
At Sleep Apnea HQ, your dental sleep appliance will be specifically customised for you, and will also be adjustable for fine-tuning after you start wearing it. Thus you will be more comfortable, see better results, and experience fewer side-effects.
At Sleep Apnea HQ, we use the highest standard of tailor-made dental sleep appliances, including the SomnoDent MAS and Airway Eze. The appliances are made of thin plastic upper and lower plates, with a soft inner lining for maximum comfort.
Our patients report that they adapt to their appliances quickly, and after a few nights of refreshing sleep, they can’t imagine going back to restless nights without their appliance.
